  I completely agree with you that every type of motivation is needed. One motivation theory might motivate some students, but not all. Since every student is different it's a very good idea to incorporate all 3 practices into your classroom just as you said. I also agree that students learn best when working with others because everyone can share their ideas.

  I was kind of surprised at first when you said it was sometimes OK to give students problems without any previous knowledge because that would be very difficult for the students. However, once I kept reading I realized that this could be a good idea especially with your fractions lesson. You're right that the students would become frusterated if this happened everytime but every once in a while sounds good. Also, pizza and pie are always a good way to help students understand fractions!
